Marathon, FL

This is not Florida anymore! Whirlwind trip home to Maine to pack it up...

Drive it like you stole it!

"We don't have time for this @*#%!!!"

2 guesses where we were when we took this shot?

Bahia Honda State Park, The Keys, FL
Cool, windy day but great day to stretch our legs with long walks on the beach.
Still lots of dead fish along the seaweed line from the "cold stunning."

Bonus trip to see the cousins while waiting for our flight home to Maine to pack up our house.
Maddie was inspired by Anna's great skill of biking with no training wheels!

Picking Teams...

Jedi Dodgeball. Each team has a designated "Jedi" who gets to free any team-mate that gets hit with a ball so they can play again. If you hit the Jedi though the game is over.

Physical Education Class with the Marathon Homeschool group at City Park.

The city of marathon provides this as a free service to the Keys Homeschoolers. They provide the instructor and all the equipment. The group meets every Tuesday at 1:00 for an hour.
The city park is next door to the marina so all the liveaboard kids get chances to participate.

Pool time!

Nature walk at Curry Hammock State Park in Marathon.

Schoolwork at Nana's hotel. It's not all fun in the sun!

City Marina, Marathon. Rows and Rows of boats!

Hey! It's Scooter again! He is a temporary resident at the Sea Turtle Hospital.
We took a great tour of t he Sea Turtle Hospital in Marathon, FL.
It was an amazing experience. We were able to see the operating room and meet 2 turtles that had undergone surgery that same morning. They were just coming out of anesthesia. We were also able to meet the other 60 residents.
With the recent unseasonably cold weather here in FL the waters dropped from their normal 70+ degrees to 47 degrees. The created a "cold stunning" of all the sea life. 500 turtles were brought to the hospital near death. They did not have the space for them all so kiddie pools were donated and they had them in every nook and cranny. They had to slowly warm all the turtles back to normal temperature 10 degrees at a time and as the turtles came back to life they had 500 turtles trying to get out of their little kiddie pools! That would have been quite a sight!
Getting to Marathon was a treat for us since we had visited here with family by car years before. It was nice to sail to an area that you were a little familiar with. It was rare for us to get somewhere where we already knew where the grocery store was and how to get around!
The biggest surprise was the Marathon City Marina. Everyone was so nice and there were a ton, and I mean a TON of live-aboard KIDS! Yea! Emma and Madeline have been in heavon here. All the boat kids have been so out going and friendly. They included the girls right away.
The marina has organized music nights, homeschool group PE, yoga for adults, scheduled pick up softball, tennis and basketball. Pretty organized place. We've met lots of families and couples that have been living here and working for 5+ years. We can see how easy it could be to get hooked!
During our time here we also have been organizing paperwork and such since we found out that our house is UNDER CONTRACT! Shhhhhh....let's not jinx it!.....................
Building inspections and appraisals will happen while here. We were fortunate to be in such a convienent place while all this is happening back home.
Nana was able to drive down from Pine Island for the last week in January for a visit. It was fun to have her with us in Marathon. Sombrero Beach and Porky's Grill are some of Nana's favorite stomping grounds!

Family Fun Day at City Park in Marathon. The park is right next to the marina (along with a prison) and provides an amphitheatre, tennis courts, softball/baseball/soccer fields and a skate park. It was a great spot for the kids to run around.

Music night at the marina. Imprompto songs, singing and rum drinking every Saturday night.

She did it!

Maddie learning to snorkel.

Sombrero Beach, Marathon. The beach was a 10 minute dinghy ride from our mooring ball at City Marina.

Coming into Marathon...Whew! 9 hour trip. We were wiped out from the 4-6 foot sea swell and wind!

It's hard to hold onto the tiller when the wind blows 20-25Kts! Agggghhh!
Big day on the water. 20-25Kt wind and big sea swell, but 80 degrees, warm and blue/green water!

Race week at Key West. Some pics of the race boats as we were leaving the harbor heading to Marathon. Boy are they FAST!

Key West, FL

Key West, FL

What can you say about Key West? It's just fun. Crazy people and sunshine. A fun mix. We'd have stayed longer but the anchorage is horrible! Lots of swells and boat traffic that zoom right by you. You rock from all day and into the night, bobbing like a cork on your hook!

The girls enjoyed all the flea markets, street performers, and live chickens running around!

Sunset Festival's street performers in Mallory Square.

Hey to Ron and Theresa from s/v "Lastdance". Great to see you! The girls found a great souvenier with their Birthday stash from you. Emma found a preserved alligator head (Yuck!) and Maddie found a sea turtle that hatched when you dunked it in water. Thank you again!

We visited Mel Fishers Treasure Museum in Key West. Amazing treasures from under the sea. Maddie is holding a priceless gold "finger" brick. It's gold is worth $15K but since it is over 350 years old and found on the ocean floor it is priceless.

Disguised pirates...Watch out!

Quiz: real or not real?

Finishing up our night sail into Key West at 3:30 in the morning.

Friendly Dolphin and her baby playing in Hook's surf at sunset.

It's Flipper!

Marco Island, FL

Marco Island, FL
Underway again! Felt great. The respite off the boat rejuvenated us for Round 2! The first day out was a beautiful sail all the way to Marco Island. The kids didn't miss a beat. They were back in their "boat routines" within the first hour.
Our stay on Marco was longer than planned. Already we were gently reminded that your schedule is not your own when you live outdoors. Mother Nature always has the master plan!
Wind and rain kept us here for several days. I have to say that alot of our best memories are in places we didn't plan to be or "had" to be because of weather.

Back to showering on board...no more land luxury's...ahhhhhh...it was nice.......

Trying to get "online" time at the local Starbucks...
